Shirley Yoo, Piano

Pianist Shirley Yoo has been praised by The Washington Post for her “extraordinary sensitivity and technical skill.” She has performed internationally at major venues including the Kennedy Center Concert Hall, Steinway Hall in London, Tata Theatre in Mumbai, Arts Center Seoul, the Penderecki Festival in Banff, and Società Filarmonica in Trento. Her performances in the United States have been broadcast on WQED and WQLN. Recent appearances include a mid-Atlantic tour celebrating Rachmaninoff’s sesquicentennial, featuring both piano suites, as well as recitals in Washington, DC, Vancouver, the Cayman Islands, and Seoul.

An accomplished soloist and chamber musician, Yoo is a top prizewinner in competitions such as the National Society of Arts and Letters and the Kosciuszko Foundation’s National Chopin Competition. She was a founding member of the Annapolis Chamber Players and League of the Unsound Sound (LotUS), a contemporary music ensemble praised by The Washington Post for a performance that “really stole the show.” She has collaborated with musicians from the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, Alarm Will Sound, and SO Percussion. She appears on the New World Records release of Mathew Rosenblum’s Circadian Rhythms.

A dedicated educator, Yoo has taught in conservatory and university settings for over two decades and frequently serves as an adjudicator for regional, national, and international competitions. She studied at Johns Hopkins University (Phi Beta Kappa), the University of Maryland, and the Royal Academy of Music, and earned her DMA from the Peabody Institute, where she currently teaches piano and chamber music.
